Literacy In reading, the students will continue using their reading strategies to identify unknown words in print. They will also continue to think about the characters, setting and plot in the story to strengthen their comprehension. In addition, they’ll be introduced to more nonfiction reading. They will learn that readers can connect ideas in a text and use nonfiction features to learn more about a text. They will understand that readers ask questions to understand the meaning of words and information in a text.
In writing, the students will continue writing personal narratives in sequence. They will understand that writers use narrative texts to tell a story. They will continue practicing the use of first grade conventions in their writing (begin with a capital letter, finger space and end marks). They will also respond to questions about texts in writing. In phonics, the students will spell words (cvc words) with digraphs, suffix s, double letter endings (-ff, -ll, -ss, -zz) and -ng, -nk ending sounds (ex. sink, sang, wing, bank). They will also practice recognition of short and long vowel sounds. They will continue to practice fluently reading all of their kindergarten red words in print and correctly spelling these words in their writing. Once this is mastered, they will move into fluently reading and writing the first grade red words. |
MathIn math, the students will continue to be encouraged to use their addition strategies when adding. They will also make and solve addition stories. They will be introduced to subtraction and various subtraction strategies (counting on and counting back to subtract).They will tell subtraction stories about pictures, write and solve subtraction sentences. They will learn about how addition and subtraction facts relate in fact families.
